Miramar Air Show canceled due to government shutdown

SAN DIEGO, Calif.

The U.S. Marine Corps released a statement Thursday announcing the cancellation of the annual show held in San Diego.

"The shutdown of the U.S. government has necessitated this decision by the United States Marine Corps and we apologize for any inconvenience this cancellation has on our sponsors and the local San Diego Community," the statement read.

The aerial show was scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The event was scaled back from three days to two after the Defense Department announced earlier this year that military flight demonstrations would not be allowed due to automatic spending cuts known as "sequestration." That included the Navy's wildly popular Blue Angels. Sequestration affected air shows around the country.
