More details are being released about a sexual assault investigation involving two third-graders at Adams Elementary School in Riverside.

School district officials say a third-grade boy allegedly sexually assault another boy, repeatedly, for more than a year. They found out about the situation on Monday when another child reported it to a teacher during an after-school program.

They say the boy apparently sexually assaulted the other student in a bathroom and in a classroom, and it happened at least five to seven times over the past two school years.

"We constantly remind kids to always report something to an adult. We're never too busy to listen to them. We're very happy that they brought this to our attention," said Jacquie Paul, a spokesperson for the Riverside Unified School District.

Paul says the two teachers in charge of the classrooms where the sexual assaults allegedly happened are both on paid leave. Counselors are available for students and staff who need help dealing with the issue.

"This is a first for us, and it's a very painful and difficult situation," said Paul.

Parents had a chance to ask questions and express their concerns at a meeting Thursday evening.

"Regardless of the fact, both boys now need help. I'm more concerned about the boys. I'm really sorry that the other little boy was put in this situation, and I hope they both get the help they need," said parent Tera Perau.

The boy accused in the alleged assault has been suspended from school. Officials say it is unlikely criminal charges will be filed because, according to the district attorney's office, when you're dealing with someone under the age of 14, you would have to prove that the child knew he or she was doing something wrong.
