Knife-wielding man fatally shot by deputies in Maywood

MAYWOOD, Calif.

Deputies initially responded to an "attempted suicide" call in the 3800 block of 56th Street around 11:06 p.m. They had been told the suspect was holding a knife to his stomach.

Responding deputies arrived at the home and found the man holding a metal object resembling a knife. The suspect brandished the object at the deputies and threatened to cause them physical harm.

When deputies ordered him to drop the object, investigators say he threw the object toward the deputies, barely missing their heads. That's when he grabbed a second long metal object, which appeared to be knife, and pointed it at the deputies. He refused to drop it and began advancing toward deputies. A deputy-involved shooting then ensued.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information was urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
