LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is moving full-steam ahead with plans to build a $300 million museum next to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

On Wednesday, the L.A. City Council voted 13-0 to back the museum, which the Academy hopes to open by 2017 on a stretch of Wilshire known as the Miracle Mile District.

Many residents living around the area had opposed the plan and expressed concerns that it will worsen traffic congestion and bring unwanted noise. Construction is set to begin later this year.
