Study: Cholesterol-lowering drug does little

March 30, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
A new study shows the popular cholesterol-lowering drug Vytorin failed to improve heart disease, even though it worked as intended to reduce three key risk factors. Leading doctors were stunned by the results considering Vytorin and other drugs like Zetia have netted $5 billion in sales, despite limited proof they help patients.

Pharmaceutical companies say the most likely explanation on why the study did not show any benefit is because the patients tested already had been treated and were less likely to show improvement.
