ARLINGTON HEIGHTS A surveillance video from a pizza shop next door was released of the moments leading up to the crime.

The surveillance camera captured the entire shooting. A man in a white shirt in the top right corner of the screen ducks when shots ring out, but is hit. Then 60-year-old security guard Hernan Cardona can be seen running past the door. Moments later, Cardona staggers back into view after being shot several times.

"At this time, it's not clear whether it was an attempted robbery, or robbery, or what exactly happened, so the investigation is still in the preliminary stages, so we're still trying to figure out what happened," said LAPD Officer Kate Lopez.

Shortly before the shooting, a 7-Eleven across the street was robbed, but police did not say whether the two incidents were related.

On Monday, a small memorial stood where Cardona was gunned down. Friends were stunned that something so vicious could happen. The 60-year-old was a Salvadorean immigrant, a father of seven and a grandfather to six.

Jaime Marquez said he worked with Cardona. Marquez said the victim was a security guard with the company for the past four years.

"He's always wanted to work. He's always working for his family, never called off. Anytime you need extra help, he'd help out," Marquez said. "And it's just sad what happened to him, and I wish we could get the suspects."

The victim in the white shirt is still hospitalized in stable condition.

Police urge anyone with information about the shooting to call (877) LAW-FULL or (877) 529-3855.
