Sleep too much, too little? Obesity risk

May 7, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
If you want to avoid obesity, government researchers say to get the right amount of sleep. A new study shows people who sleep fewer than six hours a night - or more than nine - are more likely to be obese. The study is based on door-to-door surveys of 87,000 U.S. adults.

Critics say surveys don't prove cause-and-effect relationships, but some experts say sleep problems are often a sign of stress or psychological problems, which can lead to weight gain.
