Schwarzenegger tries to stick to promise

July 23, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
Governor Schwarzenegger says he will only sign a state budget if it includes long-term reforms that will help California ride out tough economic times in the future. The governor says he wants to stick to a campaign promise he made five years ago to make California more fiscally responsible, but it appears Californians have their doubts.

A new field poll found 41 percent of those questioned do not think the governor can help resolve the state's budget crisis, and 68 percent of those responding say the state's $15 billion budget deficit is a very serious issue.

Only 40 percent of Californians now approve of the job Schwarzenegger is doing.
