LAFD may get independent oversight

VAN NUYS, Calif. The City Council will debate a ballot measure on Friday to hire an independent monitor.

Firefighter Tennie Pierce claimed his colleagues fed him dog food mixed in spaghetti as a prank. Pierce filed a lawsuit claiming discrimination and won a $1.4 million settlement.

An audit by the City Controller, released in 2006, said the incident was part of a culture of hazing and inappropriate behavior in the Los Angeles Fire Department.

L.A. councilmen Jose Huizar and Jack Weiss want to hire an independent monitor similar to the LAPD's inspector general. They said bringing in an independent assessor would help ensure that reforms in the department are strictly followed.

They believe that will help prevent discrimination and lawsuits.

The motion will be considered during Friday's City Council meeting.
