Folic acid can protect a baby's heart

We've heard how folic acid can prevent birth defects such as spina bifida, now a new report shows it can also help reduce the chance of having a baby born with a heart related birth defect.Researchers looked at the birth records of women from the northern Netherlands. They found mothers who used folic acid supplements around the time of conception were 18-percent less likely to have a baby with a heart defect.

The findings were presented to the American Heart Association.
