Girlfriend, kids attacked with box-cutter

VICTORVILLE, Calif. That man is now in custody, and the children were hospitalized at Loma Linda University Medical Center for lacerations to the head, the neck and the face.

Deputies received a call of a man with a knife chasing a woman at the Red Roof Inn in Victorville early Tuesday at about 1:40 a.m.

The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Esteban Saracho, who had chased his girlfriend out of the motel room threatening to kill her. He then ran back into the room, where the couple's three children were, and locked himself inside. When deputies knocked on the door they heard awful screams.

"Deputies could hear children begin to scream," said Karen Hunt, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Dept. "So we considered it urgent to get in there as quickly as possible. And he stabbed and slashed them on different locations, their heads, face, there were several bad wounds to the children's hands."

Deputies broke into the room through the window just in time to save those kids. The 3- and 5-year-old were air-lifted to the hospital. One child suffered a cut that almost severed her finger. The 7-month-old was taken by ambulance and they were all being treated. The hospital did not release any information on their condition.

Meanwhile Saracho is being held behind bars on $1 million bail. Investigators say that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol during the attacks.
