O.C. jail to take more illegals for money

SANTA ANA, Calif. According to the /*Orange County Register*/, the /*Santa Ana Jail*/ already gets more federal funding for housing illegal immigrants than any other municipal jail in the Southland.

Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters says he plans to negotiate an increase in the daily rate it gets for each detainee from $82 to $87 and adding 32 additional beds.

If the changes are approved, they would take effect by October.

Walters said if the jail does not bring in the additional revenue, it would have to make about $1 million in cuts.

The /*Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency*/ contracts with local jails to house immigrant detainees. Officials say the number of such detainees is growing.
