7 percent of abnormal tests unreported

June 23, 2009 11:35:59 AM PDT
Researchers have delivered some shocking news -- doctors in the U.S. fail to tell people about their abnormal test results about seven percent of the time. That translates into approximately one out of every 14 tests. Experts analyzed about 5,000 patient records from 23 practices across the country. They said the use of electronic medical records didn't seem to reduce those types of mistakes.

The study's authors say all results be sent directly to the doctor who ordered them and that patients should make sure they ask their doctor for the test results as well.
