McDonald's lattes compared to favorites

LOS ANGELES /*McDonald's*/ has launched a new line of /*McCafe*/ espresso drinks, taking aim at /*Starbucks*/ and /*Dunkin' Donuts*/ coffee customers, and it's spending an estimated $100 million on advertising

Consumer Specialist Ric Romero teamed up with /*Consumer Reports*/ and found few of the fancy espresso drinks were outstanding, but most were quite tasty.

"We drank hot and iced lattes made with whole milk, no sugar or flavorings, in order to evaluate the differences," said Erin Gudeux from Consumer Reports.

Gudeux said hot McCafe lattes tend to have more coffee flavor than those from Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks, but taste more bitter.

"None of the lattes from McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks were outstanding, but they were all tasty enough to try," she said.

Consumer Reports also tested the Colombia version of the new Starbucks instant coffee VIA Ready Brew, which is available online.

Taste tests show VIA has a more subdued flavor than Starbucks brewed coffee and is not quite as bitter tasting.

But if you like a darker roast and the somewhat bitter character of Starbucks' brewed coffee, VIA may not be the way to go.
