The body of an unidentified male has been removed from the Santa Ana Riverbed near the Pacific Coast Highway in an unincorporated area of Newport Beach. Two fishermen discovered the body at about 2 p.m. Wednesday. The body was dressed in a T-shirt, shorts, but no shoes. Authorities speculate the person was not homeless.

There have not been any missing-persons reports matching the description of the body, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Dept. Other law-enforcement agencies are being consulted.

There is speculation the man may have been caught in a tidal current or in a flash flood during a recent series of Southern California rain storms.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
