New car owner's manuals going straight to DVD

LOS ANGELES The one thing you won't find is a conventional owner's manual which has been modernized.

"The owner's manual goes away and we save 20,000 trees and 930 tons of paper annually," Chrysler public relations manager Scott Brown said. "It saves us money, the environment wins, everybody wins."

Buyers of new Chrysler vehicles will now get a DVD of the manual which has pages viewable and printable on any home computer, plus a booklet that covers the basics.

Brown says everything is still there but in a condensed version.

Owner's manuals keep using more and more paper because of their increasing size and Chrysler will still send you a conventional manual free-of-charge if you like. But it may be that very few people will request one, as most don't seem to read them anyway.

Other car companies could follow suit, so like it or not, owner's manuals may be going digital permanently.
