Ventura County Fire Department says the old station was built more than 50 years ago and is not able to handle the current sophisticated firefighting equipment. Aside from being small, officials say it no longer meets the department's operating needs and modern code requirements.
The new station is expected to allow for more rapid response times and improved facilities for firefighters and equipment.
The building was designed by Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects of San Diego and Ventura, and it will be built by AMG & Associates of Santa Clarita.
