Police: Venice driver tried to kill herself

January 15, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
A driver was injured after crashing into an apartment building Saturday morning in Venice Beach, and officials said it may not have been an accident.

The crash happened on Pacific Avenue. Police said the driver was trying to kill herself when she slammed her car into the apartment building.

The woman first hit a parked car, practically severing it in two, and then tore through a tree before crashing into the apartment building. The crash started a small fire, which was quickly put out.

Witnesses pulled the driver from the vehicle. She was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

People living in the building said at least one person was briefly trapped. Alex Pudenz was sleeping in his bed when the car came crashing through. The next thing he remembered was waking up inside of his closet.

"The car flung me into the closet, which was close by and then I heard a lady screaming, 'Get me out of here.' And that's pretty much. That's when I realized what happened out of a dead sleep," said Pundenz.

Pundenz had to climb over the car to get out of his apartment.

It is unclear if charges will be filed against the driver.
