Man charged in attacks on Hemet police

A man accused of a string of attacks on Hemet police is now charged with trying to kill a Hemet detective.

Nicholas Smit, 40, has pleaded not guilty to felony charges of attempted murder of a police officer and making a booby trap.

Smit is accused of setting a booby trap at a Hemet detective's home and surrounding the detective's car with tripwires.

The detective was set to testify in a marijuana trial.

Smit is also charged with eight felonies in connection with attacks on Hemet police.
