Pod of killer whales spotted off SF coast

February 10, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
Tourists on a whale watching trip off the coast of San Francisco definitely got their money's worth. They got a rare glimpse of a pod of killer whales.

The large group of as many as 14 whales came within 30 feet of the boat.

It's unusual to see killer whales in the Bay area because they usually stay much farther north. Marine experts believe the pod may have been hunting for gray whales.

The orca is one of the gray whale's main predators.
