Police chief on leave after alleged affair

February 12, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
The San Fernando police chief is on administrative leave, accused of having an affair with a cadet in the department.

Maria Barajas, a former police explorer and cadet, sent a letter to the city council in January claiming she and Chief Anthony Ruelas had a sexual relationship.

Barajas, 22, said it began in 2008 when Ruelas was a lieutenant. She said Ruelas started urging her to find another job in 2009.

Barajas said later, she was unfairly fired in connection with a car accident involving other cadets even though she was not driving.

Ruelas, a 49-year-old married father of three, was promoted to chief in August.
