Members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue team have landed near Tokyo.

The team, made up of 72 members and six search dogs, departed Los Angeles International Airport for Japan on Saturday.

They brought with them 74,000 pounds of equipment and supplies to help the victims of the destructive magnitude-8.9 earthquake and following tsunami.

The task force includes firefighters, doctors, engineers and experts trained in underwater rescues.

The USAR team was deployed to New Zealand recently, and some of the members went straight to Japan.

They will be joined by the only other team in the United States that makes these international trips, the rescue team from Fairfax, Virginia.
