An official-looking email warning residents in Southern California of radiation is a hoax, say officials.

The email includes the Los Angeles County Fire Department logo and the heading, "Acid rain precautions."

The email warns people that this weekend's storm could be bringing in radioactive particles from Japan, which could cause burns or even cancer.

Los Angeles fire officials say they have not released any such email.
