UTLA elects Warren Fletcher as new president

LOS ANGELES

Fletcher will succeed A.J. Duffy after receiving 53 percent of the vote. Opponent Julie Washington received 47 percent of the vote.

Fletcher says his focus will be on improving the pay and benefits of teachers, as well as protecting their jobs and retirement benefits.

New board members take office July 1.

The Los Angeles Unified School District is dealing with a $408 million deficit.
