Diocese of Toledo looks to alter school funding

A forum Wednesday night brought up some ideas and also asked for new ones. The forum was inside Saint Ursula Academy where the superintendent explained the enrollment is down across the board, especially in the grade schools. Catholic schools may be the right choice for more than 10,000 Toledo area students.

St. Ursula sophomore Leah Yodzis says, "I love St. Ursula. It's so welcoming, so friendly."

But when class sizes are shrinking, how do you stay open? That's the question the Diocese of Toledo is trying to answer before it's too late. Superintendent Chris Knight says, "We're trying to be forward thinking and trying to create a vision for the future."

Last year, Little Flower and Our Lady of Lourdes came up with a solution -- they merged. According to the superintendent, each parish is responsible for funding its own school.

The diocese has a new proposal. Under it, all of the parishes, even those without schools -- would pitch in and contribute money to keep the schools open. The strategy aims to even out teacher salaries and relieve burden from struggling churches. But right now, it's just an idea and school leaders want more. That's why they held a public forum inside Saint Ursula Academy.

Gary Jankowski says, "You know, I think it's evident that change is coming and that change is necessary."

"I think some of us are hoping for more answers to questions. We're just going to have to wait a little longer," says Jodie Banaszak.

The goal is to have a long-term strategy in place mid-summer.
