Energy drinks may not lessen alcohol's effect

LOS ANGELES

People think the caffeine helps them stay more alert and less "under the influence," but that may just be wishful thinking.

In a study, researchers gave some participants a Red Bull-vodka combination and others a similar cocktail that substituted the Red Bull with decaffeinated soda.

The Red Bull-vodka drinkers reported feeling less drunk, but they were really just as impaired as the group who drank decaffeinated soda.

According to experts, mixing energy drinks with alcohol may make you feel less impaired, but that feeling is merely your perception, not reality.
