Governor Brown signed a bill Wednesday delaying the mailing of car registration renewals giving Democratic lawmakers more time to work on a budget that maintains a tax on vehicles.

The new bill requires the DMV to temporarily delay billing people who have vehicle registration renewals due on or after July 1.

That is the date a temporary increase in the vehicle license fee is set to expire.

The bill affects nearly five million Californians with July and August renewals.

Drivers would have gotten a lower car renewal rate had this bill not been signed.
