Historic Fenton building slated for restoration

FENTON The restoration is a multi-million dollar project at the Fenton Community and Cultural Center.

The building has been around for a long time, since 1937 to be exact.

"This is the gem of our community," said assistant city manager Michael Burns.

Two world renowned architects, Eliel and Eero Saarinen, provided the community center's unique design.

"Eliel designed the St. Louis Arch," Burns said.

The foundation has stood strong, even when a tornado ripped off the roof in 2007.

The roof was replaced and now it's time to address other issues like leaks, mechanical problems and the lack of handicap accessibility.

"We are looking at doing an overhaul of the whole building," Burns said.

The project is expected to cost between $1.2 and $1.6 million.

The Downtown Development Authority will pick up most of the bill.

New additions are planned, but the center will keep it's original, historic look. The outdated mechanical room will be replaced, a new elevator will be installed and there will be more storage space.

City leaders say the improvements are important.

"A lot of our big community events are held here, but we envision more for the building. We envision more for the performing arts, more cultural arts, and we've heard from members of community that if this is done, and done correctly, they could see this as a huge draw," Burns said.

The restoration could also keep Fenton's little gem around for several more years.

If all goes well, the project will take about two years to complete.
