New Old Orchard school ready for high-tech generation

As they say, out with the old and in with the new! The "old" Old Orchard elementary school will be demolished in just a few weeks. Right next door sits the brand "new" Old Orchard school. And this building is ready for a high-tech generation.

When you compare the current Old Orchard elementary school building with the brand new one standing beside it, the contrasts are startling. This new building is full of light, mostly sunlight.

Toeldo Public Schools project manager, Ronald Miller, says, "The most commonly asked question is, 'What is that?' That is a sun shelf diffuser. We're taking outside light. There's a shelf out there too doing the same thing. We're directing sunlight to hit this ceiling."

The sensors automatically dim bulbs when sunlight provides enough light. That will save energy. Also saving energy is something called a Heat Wheel. "Instead of just exhausting it out, we're collecting it again and recycling it," says Miller.

It conserves hot or cool air inside depending on the season. Miller says, "We're bringing outside air in. Up top is the return air from the building."

The new building will also use less water thanks to high tech plumbing. "We're projecting we're going to save 44 percent on our water usage. We have low flow fixtures and waterless urinals," says Miller.

Toledo public schools will open five new buildings next fall, all built with similar green technology. Old Orchard will add sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Also, students will help tend to vegetable and butterfly gardens outdoors.

Last day of school is June 7. Demolition of the old school will start soon after that. Staff, students, parents and alumni are celebrating the history of Old Orchard Friday evening with a time capsule, dedication of the new building and a program put on by the current students.
