Long delays, hidden fees and lost money are familiar problems for airline passengers, but the federal government is now providing a little protection.
Among the new rules, airlines will face more than $27,000 in fines per person for international flights that sit on a tarmac for four hours or more.
Compensation is increased up to $1,300 dollars for bumped passengers and there are new fee rules for airline websites.
Additional measures that will take effect beginning next year include requiring taxes and fees to be included in advertised fares, allowing passengers to hold a reservation without payment and cancel it without penalty for 24 hours after the reservation is made.
Airlines will also be required to notify passengers promptly if the flight will be delayed.
