Group wants voters to decide on Calif. death penalty ban

SACRAMENTO, Calif.

A group called Safe California is launching a ballot initiative to put the issue before voters.

The group is pushing to abolish the death penalty based on the cost and stress to victims' families.

It cites a recent study showing /*California*/ has spent $4 billion to execute 13 people.

A bill proposing to get rid of the death penalty died in a legislative committee last week.
