Burglary suspect arrested after punching cop

VENTURA, Calif.

Officers at the scene observed a person who fit the description of one of the subjects described in the call, according to the Ventura Police Department. The person was riding a bicycle.

One of the two officers activated the patrol car's overhead lights and attempted to stop the man. The man told the officer "No," and continued riding away, according to police.

As the officer exited the patrol car and tried to grab the person, the man turned and punched the officer in the face.

The second officer chased after the man. The first officer got back in the patrol car and gave chase.

The two officers caught the suspect near the Brent/Channel intersection. The suspect rode his bicycle into the patrol car and fell down. He was then arrested.

The stricken officer's cheek was cut and bruised and his eye was swollen from the punch.

Police identified the suspect as Jose Hernandez, 37, a Ventura resident/transient. Hernandez was arrested for assaulting a police officer, violently resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools (found in his backpack), and outstanding felony warrants for methamphetamine possession for sale and resisting arrest.
