Lightning strikes sparked as many as 50 fires in Central California over the weekend.

More than 30,000 acres of brush burned across Kern County as of Sunday night, and many homes remained threatened, officials said.

Residents in some mountain communities were evacuated.

Firefighters focused on one major fire near Walker Basin and several smaller ones to the southeast and southwest of Bakersfield.

A fire in the Keene Complex southeast of Bakersfield was threatening numerous structures.

Residents in the communities of Keene, Hart Flat, Bear Valley, Golden Hills and Stallion Springs were being told that evacuations were recommended.

The Milano Fire in a rural area near Walker Basin consumed 10,000 acres and moved into the Sequoia National Forest, officials said.
