Detectives said 41-year-old Miguel Delacruz was walking down the middle of Palmdale Boulevard early Monday morning when the deputy attempted to stop him.
They said that's when Delacruz attacked the deputy, bit off part of his ear and tried to grab his gun.
Delacruz, who was on probation for kidnapping, faces mayhem and attempted murder charges.
The deputy's ear could not be reattached.
