LA apartment building evacuated during search for suspect

LOS ANGELES

Authorities were searching for a suspect believed to be armed and barricaded inside the building on 136 South Virgil Street.

After several hours, the SWAT team called off the standoff, but the suspect was not found.

The incident started just before midnight when three juvenile suspects entered the apartment complex and allegedly threatened a resident.

The resident called police. When officers arrived, they took two of the juveniles into custody.

A third suspect got away, sparking the evacuation and standoff. Residents were taken to the complex's gym and recreation center.

"We started hearing that there was some commotion down there," said evacuee Oleg Kens. "[Officers] were asking people in that apartment to come out, put their hands behind their heads and just leave the apartment."

Officials said it was safe for residents to return to their homes.
