US embassy locked down amid Afghan anti-American protest

February 22, 2012 12:00:00 AM PST
The United States embassy is on lockdown in Afghanistan as anti-American protests continue over the U.S. military's improper disposal of the Quran and other Islamic religious materials.

The number of those dead in the protest was increased from three to seven Wednesday. A large crowd gathered outside Camp Phoenix Air Base in Kabul where police were out in force.

Afghan police opened fire to disperse the crowd. Along with the seven deaths, more than 30 people have been wounded.

The U.S. military has apologized for inadvertently burning the religious materials and said an investigation into the incident is underway.
