Syria told to stop crackdown or face sanctions

The United States and European and Arab nations have issued a warning for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Leaders say he must agree to an immediate cease-fire or face tough sanctions. The warning came on the eve of a major international conference on Syria.

Syrian troops on Friday resumed the shelling of a rebel-held areas, killing eight people.

The government crackdown on opposition factions has left more than 5,400 people dead in the last year.
