March 12, 2012 12:00:00 AM PDT
An avalanche struck two villages in the Mondol district in northeastern Afghanistan Monday, possibly trapping at least 45 people, officials said.

No rescuers have been able to reach the area, but nearby villagers are trying to find victims and survivors.

The mountainous area is prone to such disasters. On March 4, 50 people died in an avalanche in neighboring Badakhshan province.
