US Coast Guard makes rescue attempt in world yacht race

SAN FRANCISCO

The coast guard sent rescuers to help the sailors, who were seriously injured in a storm during the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race.

Officials say the sailors' nearly 70-foot yacht hit a large wave, which knocked out steering and communications equipment. The sailors were headed to China.

Injured crew members are from Britain and Australia. The yacht was part of th 11-month, 40,000 mile race. The yacht is proceeding under secondary steering toward San Francisco Bay, where it will finish Leg 6 of the race.
