Arson suspected in San Bernardino

This is not the first time the area known to locals as "Little Mountain" has burned. But fire investigators say this fire was set by someone.

"There were several witnesses that observed several young males running from the scene immediately after the fire started," said San Bernardino Fire Battl. Chief Michael Bilheimer.

Fireworks are illegal in San Bernardino and for good reason. The lack of rain in recent months coupled with soaring summer temperatures has made for an especially dangerous fire season.

"Fireworks are a huge hazard to any community because fires can start so quickly and spread so quickly and endanger the lives and the properties of the residents nearby," Bilheimer said.

Firefighters were able to aggressively attack the blaze despite steep terrain, limited access and darkness. In all, the brush fire scorched a total of 15 acres.
