Three passengers aboard a hot air balloon were injured during a risky maneuver over the Rio Grande River in New Mexico.

The incident happened when the maneuver, called "splash and dash," went awry. The maneuver involves clipping the water, then igniting the gas burners to regain altitude and continue the flight.

But in this case, the balloon suddenly lost altitude and plummeted about 50 feet. Eight people were onboard. Three were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
