19-year-old driver charged for Skid Row deaths

LOS ANGELES

Carmen Chavez was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when her car jumped the curb, struck a wall and ran over a man and woman sleeping on a sidewalk near the corner of Fourth and Crocker streets just after midnight Sunday.

Police said the victims, identified as Randall Milton and Teryl Sageser, were dragged 50 feet. Both victims were 51 years old. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Chavez pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter. Not only was she under the influence of alcohol and under the legal drinking age of 21, she also does not possess a driver's license, according to the complaint.

If convicted, Chavez faces a maximum sentence of four years and eight months in prison. Her next court appearance was scheduled for Nov. 9.
