Barbara Walters expects to leave hospital soon

NEW YORK

In a statement read Monday on "The View," the ABC News veteran thanked people who expressed concern.

Walters fell on a step and cut her forehead while at the home of Peter Westmacott, Britain's ambassador to the United States, on Saturday night. As a precaution, she was hospitalized and received treatment.

The 83-year-old Walters says she's running a low-grade fever, and that doctors didn't want to release her until her temperature is normal. She says things are going in the right direction and she expects to be home soon.

In May 2010, Walters underwent heart surgery but returned to work a few months later. Her busy schedule includes appearances on "The View," the hit weekday talk show she created in 1997. She also continues to host prime time specials and interviews.

Her colleagues at "The View" wished her well on the air, although comic Joy Behar couldn't resist a joke, telling Walters to "lay off the Grey Goose" vodka.
