SB firefighters credit smoke detectors for saving family

SILVER LAKES, SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Firefighters responded to a residential structure fire on the 27300 block of Peninsula Lane around 11:08 p.m. The occupants were asleep at the time of the blaze and were alerted to the fire by the home's smoke detectors. Heavy smoke was reportedly coming from the attic.

Firefighters searched the home for victims and were able to rescue two rabbits.

San Bernardino County officials say it took 17 firefighters under one hour to control the fire and contain it to the area surrounding the fireplace and a portion of the attic.

During the later investigation, the origin of the fire was determined to be the exterior zero clearance fireplace. The damage was estimated at $50,000. No one was injured.
