Alleged sexual assault involves 3rd-graders at Riverside school

RIVERSIDE, Calif.

The alleged incident happened on Monday and involves children who are said to be between 8 and 9 years old. According to the Riverside Unified School District, the alleged sexual assault took place on campus. Officials say due to the nature of the crime and the ages of the children involved, they cannot give specific details.

They say as soon as school staff became aware of the situation, they contacted the Riverside Police Department. The investigation has since been turned over to child protective services.

School officials say the student who is thought to have committed the act has been disciplined. It's unclear if the student has been expelled from the school.

Parents found out about the incident from a letter that was sent home with students on Wednesday. Officials say a meeting will be held at the school at 7 p.m. Thursday to address questions and concerns from parents.

"RUSD would also like to remind parents to tell their children to always let an adult know immediately any time they see or hear of something that makes them feel afraid or uncomfortable. We are never too busy to listen. Our children's safety and comfort at school are our top priority," the school district said in a statement.

Counseling services will be made available to students and staff, according to school district officials.
