Authorities say the accident happened in the area of Bastanchury Road and Secretariat Way on Sunday just before 5 a.m. Logan Wells, 16, was riding his skateboard near the intersection when he was hit by a Kia Sorento.
The driver of the minivan pulled over and called 911. Logan was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A sheriff's official said the teen was not wearing a helmet.
Logan was an avid skateboarder and well-loved in his community. A moment of silence was held at Logan's school, El Dorado High School in Placentia, at 9 a.m., and grief counselors were available for students and staff.
"Being with Logan, he's actually given me courage," said Gavyn Gurdine, a friend. "He's just such his own person."
A makeshift memorial with messages, skateboards, candles and pictures was built near the intersection where the accident happened. As a tribute, classmates wore bucket hats and Hawaiian shirts on Monday, something Logan loved to wear.
A district spokesperson said Logan was in his second year of advanced video production and was a "promising cinematographer." His passion was obvious on YouTube, where the teen uploaded videos he shot of his friends skateboarding.
The 61-year-old driver of the minivan was not cited or arrested. Investigators say drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
