Earthquake with preliminary magnitude 4.0 hits Bay Area

OAKLAND, Calif. (KABC) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.0 struck the Bay Area around 7 a.m. Monday.

The quake was centered 1 mile north of Piedmont and 3 miles northeast of Oakland.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake had a depth of about 3.3 miles and struck on the Hayward Fault, which also saw a 4.0-magnitude earthquake on July 21 in Fremont.

Several small aftershocks were reported in the hour after the first quake, the biggest of which was a 2.4-magnitude temblor in the same area at 7:40 a.m., according to the USGS.

No major damage or injuries have been reported as a result of the quake.
