High surf advisory in effect for SoCal beaches until Tuesday

MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- A high surf warning is in effect at Malibu, Long Beach and Orange County beaches, which means dangerous rip currents and possible sneaker waves.

A storm in the South Pacific is churning up some big waves that are rolling into our coastline. Waves could reach 5 to 8 feet with occasional sets up to 12 feet at south-facing beaches, including Malibu, Zuma and Palos Verdes beaches. Waves could also reach between 4 to 6 feet between Manhattan and Santa Monica beaches.

According to the National Weather Service, the high surf and strong currents will create very dangerous swimming conditions. Beachgoers were urged to be extremely cautious and careful over the next few days.

"It's important to kind of assess the conditions... You definitely want to make sure you're a strong swimmer. You got to be careful about rip currents, that sort of thing, and, you know, just use your own judgment," said Forest Fisher of Santa Clarita.

The high surf advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday.
