Blue whales, humpback whales spotted near San Pedro coast

SAN PEDRO, Calif. (KABC) -- A few of the largest creatures on Earth made a pit stop off the Southern California coast.

Capt. Dan Sallas, with Harbor Breeze Cruises, said Tuesday was a spectacular day for whale watching. Humpback whales and blue whales were swimming around and breaching the waters off the coast of San Pedro as people stared in awe.

Sallas said there was a mother and calf blue whale swimming around, too. Watchers that witnessed the rare sightings said it was a fun thing to see.

"It was so cute when (the mother and baby) blew at the same time," young Corona resident Mia Hoage said.

Blue whales are an endangered species. Within the past year, a few of those whales have been found entangled in some fishing line in various areas along the Orange and Los Angeles county coasts.
