Fire rips through recycling facility in Commerce

COMMERCE, Calif. (KABC) -- Firefighters battled a second-alarm fire at a cardboard recycling facility in Commerce Friday afternoon.

The fire started around 2:10 p.m. at the facility in the 5500 block of E. 61st Street. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, a request for stronger water pressure was made, which will aid in the difficult firefight.

No injuries were reported. Heavy smoke and some flames were visible for miles.

Fire officials said the stacks of cardboard made the firefight hard to control. Employees of the facility were evacuating on their own by the time units arrived at the scene.

Inspector Joey Marron said about 100 firefighters were on scene with bulldozers and foam. Firefighters said the blaze was likely to burn for a few more hours because of the dense material.
